Augusta County is a county in the state of Virginia in the United States . In 2000 , the county had 65,615 residents and a population density of 26 people per square kilometer. The county seat is Verona .

Augusta County is located in northwest Virginia, bordering West Virginia in the upper northwest and has an area of 2515 square kilometers, of which one square kilometer is water. The county is divided into seven administrative units: Beverley Manor, Middle River, North River, Pastures, Riverheads, South River, and Wayne. In Virginia it is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Rockingham County , Albemarle County , Nelson County , Rockbridge County , Bath County, and Highland Counties .
history
It was formed on August 1, 1738 from parts of Orange County. It is named after Augusta von Sachsen-Gotha-Altenburg , Princess of Wales, wife of Friedrich Ludwig von Hannover and mother of the English King Georg III.

According to the 2000 census , Augusta County had 65,615 people. Of these, 1,999 people lived in collective accommodation, the other residents lived in 24,818 households and 18,911 families. The population density was 26 inhabitants per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 95.02 percent white, 3.60 percent African American, 0.15 percent Native American, 0.28 percent Asian, 0.02 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 0.32 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 0.61 percent were from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 0.94 percent of the population.
Of the 24,818 households, 33.0 percent had children and young people under the age of 18 living with them. 63.7 percent were married couples living together, 8.6 percent were single mothers, 23.8 percent were non-families, 20.1 percent were single households and 8.1 percent had people aged 65 years or over. The average household size was 2.56 and the average family size was 2.94.
For the entire county, the population was composed of 23.7 percent of residents under 18 years of age, 6.9 percent between 18 and 24 years of age, 29.8 percent between 25 and 44 years of age, 26.8 percent between 45 and 64 years of age 12.8 percent were 65 years of age or over. The median age was 39 years. For every 100 females there were 101.1 males. For every 100 women aged 18 or over there were statistically 99.8 men.
The median income for a household in the county is $ 43,045 , and the median income for a family is $ 48,579. Males had a median income of $ 31,577 versus $ 24,233 for females. The per capita income was $ 19,744. 4.2 percent of families and 5.8 percent of the population were below the poverty line. 6.4 percent of these were children or adolescents under 18 years of age and 6.6 percent were people over 65 years of age.
