Montgomery County is a county in the state of Virginia in the United States . In 2000 , the county had 83,629 people and a population density of 83 people per square kilometer. The county seat is Christiansburg . The county is part of the dry counties , which means that the sale of alcohol is restricted or prohibited.

Montgomery County is located in central southwest Virginia, about 30 km north of West Virginia , and covers an area of ​​1009 square kilometers, of which three square kilometers are water. It is bordered by counties in a clockwise direction: Roanoke County , Floyd County , Pulaski County , Giles County, and Craig Counties .

history

It was formed in 1772 from parts of Fincastle County. It was named after Richard Montgomery , a general in the American Revolutionary War .
