Roanoke County is a county in the state of Virginia in the United States . In 2000 , the county had 85,778 residents and a population density of 132 people per square kilometer. The county seat is Roanoke .

Roanoke County is located in southwest Virginia, about 30 km from West Virginia in the southwest , and covers an area of ​​650 square kilometers with no significant body of water. The county is divided into five counties: Catawba, Cave Spring, Hollins, Vinton, and Windsor Hills. It is bordered in a clockwise direction by the following counties: Botetourt County , Bedford County , Franklin County , Floyd County , Montgomery County, and Craig County .

history

It was formed in 1838 from parts of Botetourt County. In 1845 more land was added from parts of Montgomery County. It was named after the Roanoke River .
