Roanoke County is a county in the state of Virginia in the United States . In 2000 , the county had 85,778 residents and a population density of 132 people per square kilometer. The county seat is Roanoke .

Roanoke County is located in southwest Virginia, about 30 km from West Virginia in the southwest , and covers an area of 650 square kilometers with no significant body of water. The county is divided into five counties: Catawba, Cave Spring, Hollins, Vinton, and Windsor Hills. It is bordered in a clockwise direction by the following counties: Botetourt County , Bedford County , Franklin County , Floyd County , Montgomery County, and Craig County .

It was formed in 1838 from parts of Botetourt County. In 1845 more land was added from parts of Montgomery County. It was named after the Roanoke River .

Roanoke County had a population of 85,778 people as of the 2000 census . Of these, 2,256 people lived in collective accommodation, the other residents lived in 34,686 households and 24,696 families. The population density was 132 inhabitants per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 93.63 percent white, 3.35 percent African American, 0.12 percent Native American, 1.61 percent Asian, 0.02 percent from the Pacific island area and 0.39 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 0.89 percent were from two or more races. 1.04 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
Of the 34,686 households, 30.6 percent had children and young people under the age of 18 living with them. 59.9 percent were married couples living together, 8.5 percent were single mothers, 28.8 percent were non-families, 25.1 percent were single households, and 10.1 percent had people aged 65 years or over. The average household size was 2.41 and the average family size was 2.88 people.
For the entire county, the population was composed of 22.7 percent of residents under 18 years of age, 6.6 percent between 18 and 24 years of age, 27.5 percent between 25 and 44 years of age, 27.2 percent between 45 and 64 years of age 15.9 percent were 65 years of age or over. The median age was 41 years. For every 100 females there were 89.6 males. For every 100 women aged 18 years or over there were statistically 85.3 men.
The median income for a household in the county is $ 47,689 , and the median income for a family is $ 56,450. Males had a median income of $ 39,126 versus $ 26,690 for females. The per capita income was $ 24,637. 2.7 percent of families and 4.5 percent of the population lived below the poverty line. This included 5.2 percent of children and adolescents under 18 years of age and 4.9 percent of residents aged 65 or over.
