Westmoreland County is a county in the northern "tip", the so-called Northern Neck of the state of Virginia of the United States . The census of 2000 , according to the County recorded a total population of 16,718 inhabitants. The county seat is Montross .
history
Westmoreland County was formed from part of Northumberland County in 1653 . In Westmoreland County, George Washington was born in 1732 , the first President of the United States . His birthplace has been designated as the George Washington Birthplace National Monument since 1930 . Westmoreland County is also home to the fifth President, James Monroe , and Southern General Robert E. Lee .
There are three National Historic Landmarks in the county, Spence's Point Estate , Stratford Hall Plantation, and Yeocomico Church . 22 buildings and sites in the county are registered in the National Register of Historic Places (as of March 3, 2018).

According to the 2000 census , Westmoreland County had 16,718 people in 6,846 households and 4,689 families. The population density was 28 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 65.41 percent white, 30.89 percent African American, 0.28 percent Native American, 0.36 percent Asian, 0.01 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 1.75 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 1.29 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 3.46 percent of the population.
Of the 6,846 households, 25.7 percent had children and adolescents under the age of 18 living with them. 50.7 percent were married couples living together, 13.5 percent were single mothers, 31.5 percent were non-families, 26.9 percent were single households and 13.6 percent had people aged 65 years or over. The average household size was 2.43 and the average family size was 2.91 people.
For the entire county, the population was composed of 23.0 percent of residents under 18 years of age, 6.3 percent between 18 and 24 years of age, 23.9 percent between 25 and 44 years of age, 27.8 percent between 45 and 64 years of age 19.0 percent were 65 years of age or over. The median age was 43 years. For every 100 females there were 92.3 males. For every 100 women aged 18 years or over there were statistically 88.9 men.
The median income for a household in the county is $ 35,797 , and the median income for a family is $ 41,357. Males had a median income of $ 31,333 versus $ 22,221 for females. The per capita income was $ 19,473. 11.2 percent of families and 14.7 percent of the population are below the poverty line. Of these, 21.1 percent were children or adolescents under 18 years of age and 12.5 percent were people over 65 years of age.
