Floyd County is a county in the state of Virginia in the United States . At the 2000 census , the county had 13,874 people and a population density of 14 people per square kilometer. The county seat is Floyd . The county is part of the dry counties , which means that the sale of alcohol is restricted or prohibited.

Floyd County is located in central northwest Virginia, about 25 miles south of North Carolina , and covers an area of 987 square kilometers. The highest point is Buffalo Mountain with a height of around 1300 m. It is bordered by counties in a clockwise direction: Franklin County , Patrick County , Carroll County , Pulaski County , Montgomery County, and Roanoke County .

history

It was formed on January 15, 1831 from parts of Montgomery County and Franklin County. It was named after John Floyd , a governor of Virginia. The county seat was first called Jacksonville, named in honor of President Andrew Jackson . On January 23, 1896, the city was renamed Floyd.

As of the 2000 census , Floyd County had 13,874 people in 5,791 households and 4,157 families. The population density was 14 inhabitants per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 96.71 percent white, 2.00 percent African American, 0.09 percent Native American, 0.09 percent Asian, 0.01 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 0.36 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 0.74 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 1.35 percent of the population.

Of the 5,791 households, 29.1 percent had children and young people under the age of 18 living with them. 59.9 percent were married couples living together, 8.1 percent were single mothers, 28.2 percent were non-families, 24.7 percent were single households, and 10.8 percent had people aged 65 years or over. The average household size was 2.39 and the average family size was 2.83 people.

For the entire county, the population was composed of 22.2 percent of residents under the age of 18, 6.9 percent between 18 and 24 years of age, 27.6 percent between 25 and 44 years of age, 27.4 percent between 45 and 64 years of age 15.9 percent were 65 years of age or over. The average age was 40 years. For every 100 females there were 97.5 males. For every 100 women aged 18 or over there were statistically 96.7 men.

The median income for a household in the county is $ 31,585 , and the median income for a family is $ 38,128. Males had a median income of $ 30,886 versus $ 20,466 for females. The per capita income was $ 16,345. 8.5 percent of families and 11.7 percent of the population were below the poverty line. Of these, 12.7 percent were children or adolescents under 18 years of age and 15.3 percent were people over 65 years of age.
