history

John Campbell, 4th Earl of Loudoun

It was formed on May 17, 1757 from parts of Fairfax County. It was named after John Campbell , the 4th Earl of Loudoun and governor of Virginia from 1756 to 1759.

European settlement began in the 1720s and 1730s with Quakers , Iro Scots, and Germans immigrating from Pennsylvania, as well as English and slaves from Tidewater , the coastal areas of Virginia. At the time of the Revolution , Loudoun was already the most populous district in Virginia. Several minor battles took place in Loudoun during the American Civil War . In 1962, Washington Dulles International Airport , located on the border between Loudoun and Fairfax Counties, went into operation. Since then, countless companies (including AOL and Verizon ) have settled in the previously rural district. As a result, Loudoun has been one of the fastest growing counties in the United States for about 20 years. Based on the population estimate for 2005, the number of inhabitants has almost tripled since 1990. This is not only seen positively: although the supply of jobs, especially in the service sector, is as good as hardly anywhere else, on the other hand it is also increasing urban sprawl .

There are six National Historic Landmarks in the county . A total of 86 buildings and sites in the county are registered in the National Register of Historic Places (as of March 14, 2018).
