Sterling is a census-designated place in the suburbs of Washington, DC and is located west of the capital near Washington Dulles International Airport in Loudoun County , Virginia .

Localities

The following localities belong to Sterling:

  • Broad Run Farms (ZIP Code 20165) is a residential area north of Virginia State Route 7 and Virginia State Route 28 that was incorporated in 1952. The official name is Sterling or Potomac Falls. Broad Run Farms is bordered by the Potomac River to the north and Broad Run to the west. The parish was founded in 1950 when Miskel's Farm, a War site of Confederate Capt. John Mosby made known, bought and subdivided by a US Senate attorney.
  • Dulles (zip code 20166) is an area immediately adjacent to Washington Dulles International Airport , from which it got its name.
  • Potomac Falls (ZIP Code 20165) - built in the early 1990s. The northernmost part of Sterling, which is officially allowed to call itself both Sterling and Potomac Falls. The community consists of Lowes Island, Cascades, Countryside and Rivercrest and is located on the banks of the Potomac River . Potomac Falls is bordered by Great Falls to the southeast and has a number of shopping malls, schools, and community centers. Some golf courses, u. a. the Lowes Island Club are in Potomac Falls, as is Potomac Falls High School.
  • Sterling Park ( ZIP Code 20164) - a 1963 development on the farmland near Washington Dulles International Airport . In addition to the Sterling Elementary School and Park View High School, Sterling Park is also home to a variety of shops, parks, churches, and a communications center. For the region, Sterling Park has a relativelyhighnumber of immigrants and the crime rate is slightly higher than in other parts of Sterling.
  • Sugarland Run (ZIP Code 20164) - built in the 1970s. The houses at Sugarland Run are built in the style of Sterling Park. The community has a community center near man-made Willow Lake and 25 miles of hiking trails. Sugarland Run is also home to Dominion High School.

The land on which Sterling was formed was once mainly covered with farms , green spaces and forests.

Sterling is part of the Washington DC belt , and the area is home to a large number of government employees. In addition to numerous commuters, there are now many people who work in Sterling themselves. The reason for this is probably the large number of companies based in Sterling or near the airport (including America Online , Orbital Sciences Corporation . The Sterling Volunteer Fire Department, the volunteer fire department Sterling, of Sterling Volunteer Rescue Squad is for the ambulance service charge (EMS). Both are non-profit and share two stations, one in Sterling Park and the other in Cascades. The Sterling Volunteer Rescue Squad was named the best US Volunteer Rescue Service in 2006 by EMS Magazine. The Loudoun County Sheriff's Office and Virginia State Police act as police in Sterling.
