Dulles (Virginia)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Dulles is a civil parish in Loudoun County in the US state of Virginia .

Dulles is in the southwest third of the Census-designated places Sterling . The name began to be used in the mid 1980s when Loudoun County's Economic Development Officer Pam Treadwell promoted the name. The United States Postal Service then allowed Sterling businesses and residents to use the Dulles name as an alternative address. Dulles is considered an "acceptable" city name by the Post Office for the 20166 zip code, while the actual name of the city is Sterling .

The Washington Dulles International Airport is (though he uses the name Sterling in his address) partly in Dulles and partly in Chantilly in Fairfax County . The community took its name from the airport, which in turn got its name from the former US Secretary of State John Foster Dulles (1888-1959).

Dulles is home to the headquarters of Orbital Sciences Corporation , the former headquarters of MCI Worldcom and the former headquarters of America Online (AOL), which moved to New York in 2007.
