Dover, Virginia

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Dover is a civil parish in Loudoun County , Virginia . Dover is located east of Middleburg at the intersection of US Route 50 with Champe Ford Road (Virginia State Route 629 South) and Cobb House Road (Route 629 North). The Little River, a tributary of Goose Creek, rises here along US Route 50.

geography

The county seat of Leesburg is 14 miles away and the capital Washington, DC is 40 miles east of Dover. Dover is only 2 kilometers from the historically significant Aldie .

Dover's geographic importance is overestimated with only a few houses in the village on US Route 50, but Dover as a named area has a long history and appears on road maps of Virginia or even the entire United States. This is probably because the Little River Turnpike, America's first toll road, and Aldie-Ashby's Gap Turnpike ended roughly here.

history

Dover's two immutable hallmarks are Stoke, a prominent property that Teddy Roosevelt has been a frequent visitor to, and the Champe Ford Memorial, an obelisk dedicated to John Champe .

Dover Mill, built by the Hixson family in 1810 and destroyed in 1923 (the stones were reused to build Middleburg Bank), was the original mainstay. It was a profitable business before the Civil War , but could never restore the status it had lost at the front during the war years. The Dover Mill was also a popular landmark for people planning to travel along what is now Champe Ford Road to the now defunct village of Landmark.

Dover Academy was a girls' school in the mid- 19th century . The house was later bought by the McCormicks and is currently owned by a descendant, Jamie McCormick.

Pheseant's Eye was built by the Hixsons as their primary residence in the 1820s.

Current state

There are a few other old properties in Dover, as well as a kindergarten and a new farmhouse at the "crossroads". (There isn't even a stop light at the intersection of Route 50 and Route 629, but there is no need for one either.)

Dover came once CBS - reality TV series The Amazing Race before (9 season), you could see the candidates on the way to Washington Dulles International Airport on Route 629 along run. This is arguably the only time Dover has appeared on national television.
