The Amazing Race (literally The Amazing Race ) is a frequently Emmy -preisgekrönte American reality - TV show . In the game show, teams of two (in the 8th season, teams of four) face each other in a competition in which they visit predetermined locations in stages and solve certain tasks or overcome obstacles. The race leads visually around the globe by means of notices that are stored at the specified stations and is accompanied by several camera teams while the pairs of participants try to win the prize money of one million US dollars and prevent premature elimination.
Overview
The concept of the program comes from the pen of Elise Doganieri and Bertram van Munster , who successfully submitted the program to the US television network CBS , where it was first broadcast in September 2001. The show is produced by Earthview Productions - the joint venture between Doganieri and van Munster - and Jerry Bruckheimer Television , as well as Amazing Race Productions - a subsidiary of CBS Corporation - and ABC Studios , who share the worldwide distribution rights. The Amazing Race has also been produced in localized variants with varying degrees of success since 2006 .
The original US version won several awards, including twelve Emmys (until 2010), seven of which were awarded consecutively from 2003 to 2009 in the then newly created category Best Reality TV Competition Show (in the Original Outstanding Reality Competition Program ). The Amazing Race is one of the longest-running reality formats in the United States, after The Real World (MTV) and Survivor (CBS).
concept
The Amazing Race usually begins with eleven teams of two, which are reduced to three teams in the course of the multi-day "race" around the world, which fight for victory and thus the prize money of one million dollars in the last stage. The essential element in the concept is a global paper chase , combined with elements from orienteering , namely the checkpoints. The race is supplemented by various obstacles and tasks at individual checkpoints. These can be puzzles, games of skill, hard work, traditional rituals, tests of courage or physical activities. These tasks are mostly related to the local culture of the country in which the teams are currently located.
Participants play an essential role in the end product as a television broadcast. It is also part of the concept of the program that the participating teams of two must know each other beforehand. As different teams as possible are selected for each edition of the race, which will inevitably meet and interact again and again in the course of the race. The influence of this human factor is also reinforced by checkpoints at which cooperation is required, direct competition is pending or teams with additional tasks can be punished.
