Jonathan "Bates" Battaglia (born December 13, 1975 in Chicago , Illinois ) is a former American ice hockey player of Italian descent who played 622 games for the Carolina Hurricanes , Colorado Avalanche , Washington Capitals during his active career between 1994 and 2012 and Toronto Maple Leafs in the National Hockey League . He celebrated his greatest success by winning the bronze medal at the 2004 World Cup with the US national team.
Career
Bates Battaglia began his career as a hockey player on the Lake Superior State University team , for which he was active from 1994 to 1997. Previously, he was selected as a junior player in the 1994 NHL Entry Draft in the sixth round as a total of 132 players by the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim , for which he never played. After his university days, the attacker received a contract with the Carolina Hurricanes , for which he was on the ice in the National Hockey League until 2003 . With Carolina he reached the finals for the Stanley Cup in the 2001/02 season , in which he and his team were defeated by the Detroit Red Wings . On March 11, 2003, the left shooter was transferred to the Colorado Avalanche in exchange for Radim Vrbata , who gave him to the Washington Capitals after only 24 games at the beginning of the following season .
For the Capitals Battaglia scored a total of ten points scorer in 66 games in the 2003/04 season , including four goals. The American bridged the lockout during the 2004/05 NHL season in the ECHL with the Mississippi Sea Wolves . After resumption of play in the NHL, he received no new contract in Washington, so he moved to the Toronto Marlies from the American Hockey League . After a year in the AHL, he was finally hired by the Toronto Maple Leafs , whose farm team are the Toronto Marlies. For the Maple Leafs, the winger was on the ice in all 82 regular season games in the 2006/07 season and scored 31 points, including twelve goals. After he was called up 13 times in the NHL squad of the Leafs in the following season, the former international played exclusively for the Marlies in the AHL in the 2008/09 season . Since he did not get a contract extension, Battaglia became an unrestricted free agent in the summer of 2009 . It was not until November 2009 that he was signed by the Syracuse Crunch from the AHL before he was signed by Jokerit Helsinki in January 2010 .
In December 2010 Battaglia was signed by the Rochester Americans on the basis of a try-out contract of 25 games. After 20 missions, a month later he was signed by the German second division Lausitzer Füchse , which signed him until the end of the season. On February 8, 2011 - after only two games played for the Füchse - his contract was canceled by the club for health reasons. Battaglia had not passed the medical check and flew back home the next day. In March 2011 he received a contract with the Tulsa Oilers in the Central Hockey League . There he ran on the ice with his brother Anthony Battaglia . The American spent the 2011/12 season at the Swedish third division club Karlskrona HK , with whom he rose to the second-rate HockeyAllsvenskan at the end of the season .
