The Toronto Marlies are an ice hockey team in the American Hockey League . They play in Toronto , Ontario , Canada at the Coca-Cola Coliseum (9,500 seats).
history
The Toronto Marlies were founded in 2005 when the Toronto Maple Leafs decided to move their farm team to St. John's Maple Leafs in order to save money on travel expenses and have a renter for the Ricoh Coliseum . However, the audience numbers remained far below expectations and many wondered whether the move of the team, which is very popular in St. John's, was the right decision. The team was named after the former Toronto Marlboros junior hockey team , but the variant Marlies was chosen to avoid any association with the cigarette brand.
In their first year, the Marlies barely reached the play-offs , but were eliminated in the first round. The Maple Leafs are the only NHL team , alongside the Winnipeg Jets , whose farm team plays in the same city.
