The Cincinnati Swords were an American ice hockey franchise of the American Hockey League based in Cincinnati , Ohio . The Swords' venue was the Cincinnati Gardens .
history
In 1971, the Buffalo Sabers from the National Hockey League , founded a year earlier, were given the opportunity to found their own farm team in the American Hockey League . After the Sabers' plans to set up a franchise in Florida failed, Buffalo decided on Cincinnati , Ohio , as the location for the new AHL franchise and named the team based on its own name, Cincinnati Swords. Already in their first AHL season the Swords reached the playoffs, but failed in the second round with 2: 4 wins at the Baltimore Clippers . The following year, Cincinnati won the Calder Cup for the first and only time after beating the Nova Scotia Voyageurs 4-1 in the finals. The 1973/74 season, in which Cincinnati were eliminated in the first round of playoffs, was the last season for the Swords before the franchise was dissolved. The reason for the cessation of game operations was the establishment of a franchise for the World Hockey Association in Cincinnati, the Cincinnati Stingers .
