The Portland Pirates were a hockey team from the American Hockey League . They played at the Cross Insurance Arena in Portland , Maine from 1993 to 2016 . The club colors were red and black.
history
The Pirates were founded in 1993 as the Washington Capitals farm team . A year earlier, the Maine Mariners (1977 to 1992) had moved away and renamed Providence Bruins . When the Baltimore Skipjacks (1982 to 1993) decided to relocate, they moved to Portland and the Portland Pirates were founded. In 2005, the Capitals ended their collaboration with the Pirates and signed a collaboration with the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim. In summer 2008 the Buffalo Sabers became the new cooperation partner of the Pirates. This collaboration also lasted three years before it was ended by the Buffalo Sabers' acquisition of Rochester Americans in June 2011.
In their first season, the Pirates won the play-offs and thus the Calder Cup . The following year they were again among the best teams after the preliminary round, but were eliminated in the first round of the play-offs. In 1996 they reached the final of the Calder Cup again, but were subject to the Rochester Americans . Since then the results have been very varied. Either you missed the final round completely or you were usually eliminated early in the final round after a good preliminary round. In 2005, the Pirates agreed with the Cumberland County Civic Center (since 2014 Cross Insurance Arena ) on a five-year collaboration, which ended speculation about another move.
With the beginning of the 2015/16 season they cooperated in the NHL with the Florida Panthers . In May 2016, it was announced that the team would be relocated to Springfield , Massachusetts . There it will operate under the name Springfield Thunderbirds at the beginning of the 2016/17 season , replacing the Springfield Falcons previously resident there , which from now on are active as Tucson Roadrunners in Tucson , Arizona .
