The Cincinnati Mohawks were an American ice hockey franchise of the American Hockey League based in Cincinnati , Ohio . The Mohawks' venue was the Cincinnati Gardens .

history

The Cincinnati Mohawks franchise was added to the American Hockey League as an expansion team for the 1949/50 season . After the Mohawks still missed the playoffs in their first two AHL seasons, they reached the second round in the 1951/52 season, in which they lost 3-1 to the Providence Reds in the best-of-five series. Previously, Cincinnati had won the best-of-five series against the Buffalo Bisons with a sweep .

Before the 1952/53 season, the Mohawks moved to the International Hockey League , where they immediately won the Turner Cup as a playoff winner in their first five seasons. In addition, in 1958 they were the team with the highest points in the regular season. Despite these successes, the franchise was dissolved in 1958.

The gap left by the Cincinnati Mohawks, filled the AHL clubs Cincinnati Swords (1971-1974) and Cincinnati Mighty Ducks (1997-2005), as well as the Cincinnati Stingers from the World Hockey Association (1975-1979) and the Cincinnati Cyclones , who also played in the IHL from 1992 to 2001, and from 1990 to 1992 and 2001 to 2004 in the ECHL , in which they have been represented again since 2006.
