The Salt Lake Golden Eagles were an American ice hockey franchise of the International Hockey League from Salt Lake City , Utah . Their home ground was the Delta Center .

history

The Salt Lake Golden Eagles were founded in 1969 as a franchise of the Western Hockey League . In the same year those responsible for the Eagles entered into a cooperation with the Boston Bruins from the National Hockey League . This existed until 1970. Then the Buffalo Sabers decided to cooperate with the IHL club. It existed for two years and was dissolved again in 1972. In the WHL the club played until 1974 before moving to the Central Hockey League . After the game operation of the WHL was set after the 1973/74 season, the Eagles consequently entered the Central Hockey League. There the club was able to win the Adams Cup , the championship of the CHL, in 1975, 1980 and 1981 .

In 1984 the CHL also disbanded and the Salt Lake Golden Eagles moved to the International Hockey League. With the entry into the IHL a cooperation with the Calgary Flames was entered into. As a result of this cooperation, numerous Flames players, such as the native Canadian Patrick Lebeau , wore the Eagles' jersey. Three years after joining the IHL, the Eagles were able to win the play-off final in 1987 with 4-2 victories against the Muskegon Lumberjacks . This was the first time in their club's history that they secured the Turner Cup .

In the following season 1987/88 the team was able to defend the title against the Flint Spirits . In 1989, the Eagles reached the final of the Turner Cup for the third time in a row. This time the team lost 2: 4 to the Muskegon Lumberjacks. This was also the last participation in a play-off final. The Salt Lake Golden Eagles existed until the summer of 1994 and then moved to Detroit and consequently competed in the International Hockey League under the name Detroit Vipers .
