The Cincinnati Wings were an American ice hockey franchise of the Central Professional Hockey League from Cincinnati , Ohio .

history

In 1963, the franchise was one of five founding members to start playing in the Central Professional Hockey League, which was held for the first time . Initially, the team was based in Indianapolis , Indiana , where they played as the farm team of the Detroit Red Wings from the National Hockey League under the name Indianapolis Capitols in the Pepsi Coliseum . The name was chosen based on the Indianapolis Capitals , which were active from 1939 to 1952 under a similar name in the American Hockey League . After just nine match days in their premiere season , the team was forced to relocate from the Detroit Red Wings, as the stadium was badly damaged by a gas explosion during a figure skating show in which 74 people died and could no longer be used.

The association eventually relocated the farm team to Cincinnati , Ohio , and changed the name to Cincinnati Wings based on their own name. The playing time did not go as expected and only twelve of the 72 games could be won. The Cincinnati Wings were the only one of the five teams to miss the playoffs for the Adams Cup . After the season, the team was relocated to Memphis , Tennessee , where they took part in the CPHL game operations from then on under the name Memphis Wings .
