The Denver Spurs were an ice hockey team from Denver , Colorado , which, among other things, was active in the North American World Hockey Association (WHA). The franchise switched to the WHA for the 1975/76 season . After the team got into financial difficulties, it was relocated to Ottawa, Canada, with a rescue attempt in January 1976 and played under the name Ottawa Civics for 15 days .

The Denver Spurs first played in the Western Hockey League from 1968 to 1974 . Then joined the team in the Central Hockey League , in which they, however, only a year was long, as team owner Ivan Mullenix approval for a franchise from the May 1975 World Hockey Association was granted after the end of the 1974-75 season, the The end of two WHA teams looming, the league-owned Baltimore Blades and the Chicago Cougars . The big challenge was to put together a competitive team in just five months.
The new McNichols Sports Arena served as the stadium, with a capacity of 16,800 spectators. As a coach, you undertook with Jean-Guy Talbot former coach of the Denver Spurs from the CHL. Much of the team came from the Chicago Cougars.
The management was aware that only a good sporting performance, especially at home games, could lay the foundation for the team's financial success. The players did not succeed, however, and they started at home with eight defeats in a row. The star in the team was Ralph Backstrom . After the average attendance was only around 3,000 per game, Mullenix pulled the emergency brake early on and planned to sell the franchise to Ottawa. The move to Ottawa was on January 2, 1976. The team should be taken over by the "Founders Group". In Ottawa, however, the franchise only survived for a short time and after 15 days and only eight games stopped playing completely a little later.
