The San Francisco Seals were an American ice hockey franchise of the Western Hockey League based in San Francisco , California .

history

The club was founded for the 1961/62 season as a franchise of the Western Hockey League . The two most successful years in franchise history were the 1962/63 and 1963/64 seasons , when the team won the Lester Patrick Cup .

When the National Hockey League announced in 1966 that it would expand the league by six teams for the 1967/68 season after the " Original Six " , Barry van Gerbig acquired the San Francisco Seals, and since there was no suitable ice rink in San Francisco, settled he moved the franchise to Oakland. In the Oakland Arena , the team completed another season under the name California Seals in the WHL. The city then received an NHL franchise and from then on played with a team of the same name in the NHL.
