The Portland Buckaroos were an American ice hockey franchise of the Western Hockey League based in Portland , Oregon .

history

The New Westminster Royals from the Western Hockey League stopped playing in 1959. The franchise was then moved to Portland, Oregon, after a year of inactivity for the 1960/61 season , and renamed Portland Buckaroos. The name was chosen based on a team of the same name that took part in the Pacific Coast Hockey League between 1928 and 1941 . In the WHL, the Buckaroos played until the league was dissolved in 1974. In 1961, 1965 and 1971 they each won the Lester Patrick Cup , the championship title of the WHL.

The 1974/75 season spent the Portland Buckaroos in the amateur league Western International Hockey League. The 1975/76 season they also spent in the amateur field in the Northwest Hockey League, although the season was not even played to the end. Then the Portland Buckaroos stopped the game. The void in the city was filled in the 1976/77 season by the Portland Winterhawks , who have since played in the top junior Western Hockey League .
