history

The San Diego Gulls were founded in 1966 as a franchise of the Western Hockey League , in which they never got past third place, which they took in six of eight seasons. In the first six years from 1966 to 1972, the team was coached by Max McNab , before Jack Evans took over as head coach in the last two seasons. After the WHL was dissolved in 1974 and the New Jersey Knights were relocated from the competing World Hockey Association to San Diego , where they took part in the game operations of the WHA under the name of San Diego Mariners , those responsible dissolved the franchise.

In the following years, other teams from the International Hockey League , ECHL and a US junior league named themselves after the team.
