Original Six

Venues for the Original Six and the rest of the NHL teams

In ice hockey, Original Six is the name given to the six of today's 31 teams that have been represented in it since the National Hockey League acquired exclusive rights to play the Stanley Cup . The name is misleading as it suggests that the teams are founding members of the NHL, which has existed since 1917. The term came about because the Six from 1942 to 1967, in the "Golden Era" of the NHL, made up the entire league. However, this phase of NHL history is sometimes very controversial, both economically and athletically.
