About this picture

The Murtal district is a political district of the state of Styria , the seat of the district administration is Judenburg .

With an area of 1,675.78 km², the Murtal district is the third largest district in Styria in terms of area, and the eighth largest in terms of population.

It borders on the following neighboring districts:

The district abbreviation for the license plates is MT , license plates with this identifier have been issued for new registrations and re-registrations since July 2012.

history

The Murtal district was founded as part of a reform carried out by the Styrian regional government under Governor Franz Voves ( SPÖ ) and his deputy Hermann Schützenhöfer ( ÖVP ) with effect from January 1, 2012.

After the state elections held in 2010, a so-called “reform partnership” was established. In the course of these reforms in politics and state administration, in which municipalities are to be amalgamated and the number of members of the Styrian state parliament is to be reduced, the government parties also decided to merge the two districts of Judenburg and Knittelfeld .

As part of the municipal structural reform 2014/15 , the number of municipalities in the district was reduced from 38 municipalities to 20 on January 1, 2015, since then the district has consisted of the areas of the following municipalities:

Fohnsdorf, Gaal, Hohentauern, Judenburg, Knittelfeld, Kobenz, Lobmingtal, Obdach, Pöls-Oberkurzheim, Pölstal, Pusterwald, Sankt Georgen ob Judenburg, Sankt Marein-Feistritz, Sankt Margarethen bei Knittelfeld, Sankt Peter ob Judenburg, Seckau, Spielberg, Unzmarkt- Frauenburg, Weißkirchen in Styria, Zeltweg.

In the city of Knittelfeld, a citizen service point has been set up for frequently requested business cases (driver's license, passport, etc.), and the forest service for the former Knittelfeld district remains there. In addition, the social department of the BH, the district school council and the district police command , all three responsible for the entire district of Murtal, have their headquarters in Knittelfeld .

Surname

Decisive for the choice of the name for the district, which is named after a region for the first time in Austria, was a suggestion from the initiative “Kraft. Das Murtal ”, the head of the Murtal Chamber of Commerce and the chairman of the Murtal holiday region, which was sent to the state government in a joint letter in July 2011. However, the term is geographically imprecise and was therefore controversial.

Another suggested name, Aichfeld , which has already been used by some companies, would have suited the area (in the valley) of what is now the Murtal district, compared to the neighboring districts ( Murau above and Bruck an der Mur , now Bruck-Mürzzuschlag ) delimited.

Judenburg and Knittelfeld were also united in one district between 1868 and 1946, then under the name Judenburg.

Administrative division

The Murtal district is divided into twenty municipalities , including four towns and seven market towns.
