The place Hohentauern in front of the Triebenstein

Hohentauern is located on the Triebener Tauern Pass in the Rottenmanner Tauern . The place Hohentauern is 1274  m above sea level. Highest point is the west preferred Large Bösenstein ( 2448  m ), the east are Gamskögel ( 2386  m ).

The community consists of the only cadastral community (Hohentauern) , as well as only one counting district .

history

Reconstructed Celtic village in the Keltenberg nature park

The important Roman road Virunum - Ovilava (Zollfeld - Wels), part of the Via Norica from Aquilea (near Venice) into the Ufernorikum (Danube region) ran here. Also the post station Tartursanis , which is mentioned in the Tabula Peutingeriana , is mostly identified with the "high" Tauern, its location is unknown.

From the 14th century the place was Hohentauern to church and Tauernwirt, stopping point of the mule trains , which until the 19th century was only a small Kirchweiler. Also were of importance of magnesite - and the graphite -Mining in the district mining (Sunk) , with further processing in Magnesitwerk drives has been set, the early 1990s because of cheaper competition from other countries. In 2013, magnesite mining was resumed on a trial basis.

The parish of Hohentauern , previously a branch of St. Lorenzen im Paltental , was established in 1892. The political community of Hohentauern was established in 1849/50. During the municipal structural reform in Styria 2013–2015, it was one of the few that was not united into one large municipality, and has since been the smallest municipality in Styria.

Economy and Infrastructure

According to the 2001 census of workplaces , there were 32 workplaces with 96 employees in the municipality as well as 148 out-commuters and 30 in-commuters. There were 25 agricultural and forestry holdings (8 of them in the main occupation), which together cultivated 2,300 ha (1999).

Winter (skiing) and summer tourism are of some importance. The small Hohentauern ski area with five lifts is located on the Wirtsgupf. It begins in the village and at the Moscher holiday complex .

  • Road: The access to traffic is via the Triebener Straße B 114, an important road connection over the Triebener Tauern from the Mur - into the Ennstal .
