The iron industry then declined in the 19th century. Today there is still a tool forge in town, the Kathalschmiede.
The municipality of Eppenstein was created on January 1, 1965 through the amalgamation of the municipalities Schwarzenbach am Grössing and Schoberegg with parts (KG Mühldorf) of the - thereby dissolved - municipality Allersdorf near Judenburg. The name chosen was that of the old margrave and ducal family of the Eppensteiner .
