The Obdacher Sattel is a mountain pass between Carinthia and Styria . It lies between the Packalpe and the Seetal Alps at 955 m above sea level. A. and connects the Lavant valley with the Aichfeld .
history
Even in pre-Roman times, a road led over the Obdacher Sattel, it connected the Draudurchbruch with the upper Murtal and thus formed an alternative route to the Semmering route . Beyond the Obdacher Sattel, the road descended very quickly into the Murtal crossing the Alps. South of the Obdacher saddle, however, the prehistoric road had to overcome numerous steep inclines, which was also the reason why the Romans took their time to expand. This only happened when this was absolutely necessary, namely when the troops needed a safe and fast route to the north to push back the Germanic peoples who were pushing over the Danube .
The old road had, of course, not been enough for the mining and other local traffic without isolated extensions and improvements by the Romans . For the legions and their equipment , some additional roads were created in the 1st century, but certainly no later than during the reign of Emperor Vespasian , and some existing older roads were converted into roads. Nevertheless, the performance of these roads remained limited, as the steep gradients, especially on the southern ramp of the Obdacher saddle, made additional teams necessary. Most of the time, the population had to take on these clamping services without any consideration.
traffic
The Obdacher Straße (B 78) and the Lavant Valley Railway lead over the Obdacher Sattel from Reichenfels in Carinthia to Obdach in Styria. The B 78 over the Obdacher saddle was completely renovated in 2005 and the cross-section widened somewhat. A chain berth for trucks and buses was built between Obdach and Obdacher Sattel . Along with the Neumarkter Sattel, the saddle is the main traffic point between Carinthia and the cities of Knittelfeld , Judenburg , Leoben and Bruck an der Mur .
