The Zellerrain , also Zeller Rain ( 1121 m above sea level ) is a mountain pass in the Ybbstal Alps west of Mariazell . It lies on the state border between Lower Austria and Styria .
The federal road 71 leads as Zellerrain road via Neuhaus am Zellerrain (998 m) and the Zellerrain pass to the Erlaufsee and Mariazell. Due to the steep incline on the Styrian side and the rough weather conditions typical of this area, it was often closed when it snowed. With a re-routing in 2004, the incline was increased from 22% to max. 12-15% decreased. The old street is closed with a barrier and can only be used by the residents of the scattered settlement Hechtensee. The area of the pass was lowered, the south-facing slope was cut and a parking lot was created.
The top of the pass is the starting point for some hikes, such as on the Feldwiesalm, the Gemeindealpe , over the Riffelsattel to Lackenhof or on the Ötscher . The river Ybbs rises at a distance of about 3 km (as the crow flies) at the foot of the Großer Zellerhut and bears the name Ois as far as Lunz am See .
