The Klammljoch ( Italian Passo di Gola ) is an alpine crossing between the Rieserferner group in the south and the Venediger group in the north at 2288  m above sea level. A. and connects Sand in Taufers through the Reintal and Knuttental in South Tyrol with St. Jakob in Defereggen in East Tyrol .

Geography and history

On the East Tyrolean side, the Arvental joins the Klammljoch as the rearmost part of the Defereggental . The Arvental, Schwarzachtal and Jagdhausalm are still cultivated by South Tyrolean farmers due to centuries-old grazing rights , although these pastures are in Austria . The otherwise closed driveway over the Klammljoch is mainly used by those farmers to get to their East Tyrolean pastures.

Since the Treaty of Saint-Germain came into force in 1920, the border between Italy and Austria has run across the Klammljoch . The yoke also forms the border between the Rieserferner-Ahrn Nature Park and the Hohe Tauern National Park .

West of the yoke is the small Klammlsee at around 2250 meters and the Knuttenalm at 1911 meters .

The Defereggental was settled across the Klammljoch from the 11th century .

traffic

The Klammljoch is closed to motor vehicle traffic, but can be accessed by bicycle. The road between Rein in Taufers and the Oberhaus-Alm in Defereggental has a gravel surface.

On the South Tyrolean side, the road to the Klammljoch can be driven to the hikers' car park just after Rein in Taufers . On the East Tyrolean side, the road to the Klammljoch can be driven up to the Oberhaus-Alm (1786 meters), whereby a toll has to be paid from the junction of the Defereggentalstraße to the Staller Sattel near Erlsbach.
