The Perchauer Sattel ( 995  m above sea level ), like the neighboring Neumarkter Sattel to the west, is a gentle transition between the upper Mur Valley and the Olsa Valley , which leads into the Klagenfurt Basin . The saddle, named after the town of Perchau , is accessible to road traffic through the Friesacher Straße (B 317) . The state border runs further south near Dürnstein in Styria , where the Olsaklamm forms a natural border. The importance of these two crossings on an earlier iron and salt road is documented by several medieval castles: Dürnstein in the south, the cave castles Schallaun and Puxer Lueg (or Puxer Loch) in the north.

Surroundings

To the south of the saddle is the important medieval iron trading center Friesach , to the north-west is today's village Oberwölz , which the iron trade helped to obtain one of the first town charter awards in Styria.

history

Even if the Perchauer Sattel used to be in the shadow of the Neumarkter Sattel , a little further to the west, it was also climbed very early. From the year 888 a journey, indeed an express march, of the German King Arnulf is known, who verifiably required only twelve days for the way from Karnburg over the Perchauer Sattel and the Pyhrnpass to St. Florian - an enormous travel speed for that time, the sufficient one Assumes road conditions.

Today the Perchauer Sattel is more important in road traffic, because while there is only one local road over the Neumarkter Sattel, there is a long-distance road over the Perchauer Sattel. The Rudolfsbahn was almost built over the Perchauer Sattel, but the decision was made in favor of the Neumarkter Sattel. The main reason was that this railway was routed in the Murtal to Frauenburg in the valley floor and not on a slope from Judenburg . If one wanted to reach the Perchauer Sattel from Frauenburg, a hairpin would have been necessary, but this would have negated the advantages of the Perchauer Sattel's somewhat more favorable location compared to the Neumarkter Sattel.
