The Neumarkter Sattel is a gentle pass in Styria with a peak height of 894 m above sea level. A. between the upper Murtal and the Olsatal , which leads into the Klagenfurt basin . The Rudolfsbahn runs over the pass named after Neumarkt in Styria . The state border with Carinthia runs further south near Dürnstein in Styria , where the Olsaklamm forms a natural border. The importance of this transition on an earlier iron and salt road is documented by several medieval castles:Dürnstein in the south, the cave castles Schallaun and Puxer Lueg (also Puxer Loch ) in the north.
Surroundings
The saddle marks the border between the Gurktaler and Lavanttal Alps . Adjacent crossings are the Flattnitz in the Gurktalern and the Obdacher Sattel in the Lavanttalern . Further crossings are in the Niedere Tauern of the Radtstädter- , Sölker- and Triebener Tauern .
To the south of the saddle is the important medieval iron trading center Friesach , to the north-west is today's village Oberwölz , which the iron trade helped to obtain one of the first town charter awards in Styria.
history
A Norse road led across the Neumarkter Sattel , which was expanded by the Romans during the imperial era and which became one of the most important Roman roads in the Eastern Alps. Even in the Middle Ages , the Roman road was actively used and probably also expanded. In 1235 Staufer Emperor Friedrich II crossed the saddle on one of his trains to Rome . Today a country road leads over it, the main traffic leads over the Perchauer Sattel, a few kilometers to the east . The Rudolfsbahn has been running over the Neumarkter Sattel since 1879 ; it connects Klagenfurt with the Leoben railway junction .
