The Hengstpass is a mountain pass in the Upper Austrian municipality of Rosenau am Hengstpass on the border with Styria . It separates the Reichraminger Hintergebirge ( Upper Austrian Pre-Alps ) from the Haller Mauern ( Ennstal Alps ). The pass crossing is developed as a state road L 550 and connects the towns of Windischgarsten and Rosenau on the Hengstpass with the towns of Oberlaussa and Unterlaussa , some in Styria, some in Upper Austria, and the Styrian market town of Altenmarkt .

Location and importance

The Hengstpass forms the watershed between the Dambach  in the west, which drains over the Teichl into the Steyr , and the Rotkreuzbach in the east, which flows over the Laussabach into the Enns . The deepest point of the watershed is 964  m above sea level. A. and can be found at the Egglalm . This was used as a pass station with an inn and post office until the Hengstpassstraße was re-routed. The Egglalm is accessed today by a goods road. Today's state road no longer leads over the former Hengstpasshöhe , but over a side pass to the east, reaching a height of 985  m above sea level. A.

The old Hengstpassstraße had been of great importance for the transport of provisions and iron since the 16th century . While the iron was transported from the Ennstal to the Garstner, Krems and Steyrtal valleys for further processing, the iron workers were provided with food in the opposite direction. At the pass, stallions were provided for the carters for a fee in order to be able to protect their draft animals.

Due to the topographical location, heavy snowfalls often occur in winter, which make it temporarily impossible to use the pass road. Due to the meanwhile high tourist importance, the street is cleared quickly. Two avalanche galleries were built across the street in the area of the Rosenau community .

It was not until 2008 that a power line was built along the pass to supply the numerous buildings with electricity all year round.

In November 2015, a 43 m high triangular tubular tower as a transmitter for mobile telephony (with LTE 800) was erected by helicopter at the foot of the Mitterberg - its summit is a good five kilometers south of the pass - at 1400 m above sea level, which has been the area of the pass since the introduction of GSM is supplied with mobile communications for the first time. The nearby community of Rosenau to the west and blue light organizations supported the request of network operator A1 to set up this transmitter in the nature reserve.

tourism

The pass area is known as a popular hiking region with numerous managed alpine pastures and inns. There are countless opportunities for hiking, skiing and cycling tours available in both summer and winter. Signs include a circular hiking trail from the Puglalm and a hiking trail from the Peterbauernalm to the Schoberbauernalm. The climbing garden on the Kampermauer ( 1394  m , location ) is also well attended . The pass borders the southern edge of the Kalkalpen National Park .

Near the top of the pass there is a parking lot in the Zickerreith area, from which it is possible to go hiking in the national park. A popular hiking destination here is above all the Wasserklotz ( 1505  m , location ), from which one can look towards Windischgarsten and Totes Gebirge as well as far into the national park and beyond.

The Hengstpasshütte is a self-catering hut right on the pass, next to it a charging station .
