The Gaberl is a mountain pass and a ski area in Styria . The Gaberl Straße leads up to 1547  m above sea level. A. (according to other information 1551  m ) between Gleinalpe in the north and Stubalpe in the south of Köflach into the upper Murtal . Parts of the western ramp are a former Roman road , a historic salt and wine transport route that led via the Alte Almhaus into western Styria and can still be seen at the Stüblergut on the western side of the pass ( location ).

At the top of the pass is the Gaberlhaus , which can look back on more than 150 years of history. The owner at the time, Gabriel Klauzer, called "Gaberl", became the namesake of the pass crossing. The Gaberlhaus was temporarily owned by the Köflach section of the PES and was operated as a refuge . Today the Gaberlhaus is a PES contract house .

To the south of the Gaberl, the Hirschegger Saddle , which is roughly the same height, also connects the Murtal with Köflach.

history

Already in Roman times there was presumably a connecting route which , coming from Piber and Maria Lankowitz , led across the area of the old Almhaus into the Knittelfelder area. 1420 three farms with be Vulgonamen Stübler on the Piberalm in a Urbar the counts of Montfort above, which treated with salt from the Obersteiermark. From the middle of the three farmsteads, the later Stüblergut and inn emerged. Due to the Stüblergut, the top of the pass was also referred to as the Stubalpe . The Montforters had their own judicial rights in their office Salla , which was named as Freiung in 1420 , whereby the state judge had no rights here.

In the time around 1790 there was still no direct route from Salla to the upper Murtal, but the road ran from Maria Lankowitz, via the Alte Almhaus and the Stüblergut. In 1822, the district office of Graz decided to build what is now Gaberlstrasse from Köflach via Salla and the Nestleralpe. The road construction was led by District Commissioner Peter Tunner from Salla. Construction was not yet fully completed in 1831. Around 1860 a cattle keeper's house at the top of the pass was managed by a Gabriel Klautzer, who also ran it as an inn. Since he became acquainted with hikers and craftspeople, the area was soon mentioned by Gaberl . From around 1900 tourists also came to the Gaberl, so that the Köflach section of the DuÖAV built the Gaberlschutzhaus in 1909, which had its own telephone connection from March 1914. From around 1910, winter tourism came up on the Gaberl and the ski area was further expanded until it included five ski lifts in 1963.

Around 1914 the traffic on Gaberlstrasse began to increase sharply and the route from Söding via Gaberl became one of the main traffic arteries in the Voitsberg district. Thoughts also began on nationalizing the street, which would make it a district street II from Salla onwards. In 1929, the connection route to the Old Almhaus was to be made passable for cars. Shortly before the end of the Second World War, several transports of prisoners and Jews took place via the Gaberl to Upper Styria, with several executions occurring between Salla and the top of the pass. After the Second World War and especially after the completion of the Gleinalm tunnel , the regular traffic volume decreased sharply. The Gaberl became a popular excursion destination from around 1950. In October 1962 the high voltage line over the Gaberl was completed. On March 1, 1963, the water supply system built by the Stubalpe water supply cooperative was inaugurated. Between 1981 and 1983 the street on the Gaberl was expanded and terraced.

tourism

The Gaberl is a popular local recreation area for the surrounding area. In summer the area is suitable for long hikes. The north-south long-distance hiking trail (05) leads over the pass in a north-south direction . In winter, there are four tow lifts in the Gaberl ski region. The former Wiedneralm ski area, which is now home to many weekend houses , also bears witness to the change in tourism.

Transport and trade

The Gaberl is accessible from Köflach with line 733 of the ÖBB-Postbus , which runs on Sundays and public holidays in the morning from Köflach to the Gaberl and in the evening back to Köflach.

Every year on July 26th, the Annamarkt, a cattle market, takes place on the Gaberl.

Wind turbines

In 2006, a small wind park with two wind turbines and a total output of 1600 kW was put into operation at Gaberl ( location ). The electricity generated is fed into the network of Stadtwerke Köflach .

Buildings and sights

The Gaberlschutzhaus (originally: Stubalpenhaus "Gaberl" ), a simple alpine hut run by Ignaz Schmölzer (* February 1, 1830, † May 30, 1919) from 1882 to 1906 and then by his son until 1908, was removed from the section in early summer 1908 Köflach of the DuÖAV was put into operation and subsequently rebuilt and expanded by master builder Alois Kri (e) chbaum based on plans by builder Richard Payer. The grand opening of the house took place on July 11, 1909.

In the years 1962/63 the shelter was renovated and expanded and in the following decades further modifications and extensions took place. The Gaberlkirche was inaugurated on October 11, 1970 by Bishop Johann Weber . The Wöcherlkreuz was inaugurated on September 20, 1936 and rebuilt after being destroyed by a flood in 1950.
