The north-south long-distance hiking trail (also known as the north-south long-distance path , NSWW for short ) is a long-distance hiking trail in Austria from Nebelstein to Eibiswald . It goes back to an initiative of the sculptor Carl Hermann , who with this hiking trail created a connection between his new home in the Waldviertel, which he found after the Second World War, with his old home in western Styria .

The trail was opened on September 25, 1970 during the general assembly of the Austrian Alpine Club in Graz. It mainly runs through the federal states of Lower Austria and Styria , although Upper Austria and Carinthia are also briefly touched.

course

The north-south long-distance hiking trail leads from Nebelstein via Karlstift and Ottenschlag through the Waldviertel, crosses the Danube at Spitz by means of the roller ferry and runs through the Wachau to Melk . Through the Mostviertel you get to Plankenstein Castle and further over the Hochbärneck and through the gate walls to Lackenhof . The further course past the Ötscher and over the Gemeindealpe leads hikers to the banks of the Erlaufsee and to Mariazell .

The end stone in Eibiswald

The following alpine heart of the path crosses the summits of the Hohen Veitsch , the Hochschwab and the Eisenerzer Reichenstein . The Murtal is crossed at Leoben and the ascent to the Mugel is tackled. You hike over the mountains of the Glein and Stubalpe to the Koralpe , whose Großer Speikkogel marks the last 2000 m of the north-south long-distance hiking trail. The destination Eibiswald is finally reached via Sankt Katharina in der Wiel and Sankt Oswald ob Eibiswald .

Approximately three weeks are estimated for the hike through the 500 km long route.

mark

The path is well signposted with path number 05, the color symbols are red-white-red. Sections of the north-south long-distance hiking trail are marked 405, 505, 605 and 805 (e.g. Leoben-Eibiswald: 505). There are only a few and short variants, for example a 505B variant north of the Salzstiegl leads over the Rappoldkogel , the town of Pack is accessed by a 505A variant and another variant 505A runs on the Hebalpe to the Hebalmsee.

The route of the north-south long-distance hiking trail is determined by the Austrian Alpine Association, the contact and information center is its long-distance hikers section .

European long-distance hiking trail E6

Together with the Nordwaldkammweg , the north-south long-distance hiking trail forms the Austrian section of the European long-distance hiking trail E6 , whereby the signposts of the E6 rarely appear in addition to the markings on the two routes mentioned.

On the Styrian Seeberg , the long-distance hiking trail cross, a wooden sculpture created by the trail's founder, Carl Hermann, points to the symbolic intersection of the E6 with the European long-distance hiking trail E4 .
