The European long-distance hiking trail E4 is part of the European hiking trail network and is intended to connect the most south-westerly point of the European continent ( Cape St. Vincent in Portugal ) in a large arc through western central Europe with the island of Cyprus in the south-east .

course

Today the route runs on the Iberian Peninsula from Tarifa at the southern tip of Spain along the Catalan coast to the Pyrenees , which it crosses east of Andorra .

The route reaches Lake Constance via France and Switzerland . From the national border near the La Dôle summit , the long-distance hiking trail follows the Jura ridge to Dielsdorf, north of Zurich, along the Swiss Jura High Trail . In Switzerland, the E4 is sometimes marked with an additional sign to the yellow path markings that are usual there (name: Pyrenées - Jura - Balaton).

In the alpine border area between Germany and Austria , two levels of difficulty are offered. The German pre-Alpine variant mostly coincides with the Maximiliansweg . In the further course to the Neusiedlersee there are also two variants: The alpine variant follows the Nordalpenweg 01 , the pre- alpine variant follows the Voralpenweg 04 and from Vienna the Eastern Austrian borderland path 07 .

The Hungarian section of the trail runs from Kőszeg to Sátoraljaújhely together with the Országos Kéktúra or from Budapest to Sátoraljaújhely together with the Eisenach – Budapest mountain hiking trail . The Hungarian section from Sátoraljaújhely to Nagykereki runs on the route of Alföldi Kéktúra .

So far, the description of the European Trekking Association ends at the Romanian border, but the tour can be continued from Oradea to Gura Văii on the route of the E3 , where you reach the Serbian part of the E4.

The Serbian section leads from the Hungarian-Serbian border at Srpski Krstur on the Tisza over the Iron Gate of the Danube to Gradinje near Dimitrovgrad .

Another, only partially marked section of the long-distance hiking trail leads through Bulgaria and the Peloponnese ( Greece ), over the island of Crete to Cyprus .

With a total length of approximately 10,450 km, the E4 is by far the longest of all European long-distance hiking trails.
