Type Long-distance hiking trail

The European long-distance hiking trail E12 will one day open up the coastal regions (as a very broad term) of the participating states under the name "Mediterranean Trail " or "Mediterranean Hiking Trail ". The construction of a new E-Weg was initiated and decided in 2009 by the hiking / tourism organizations of Italy, France, Spain and Morocco. It was developed as the last within the European network of hiking trails and is designed to connect the European coast of the Mediterranean Sea from Spain to Greece.

Until the beginning of 2011, the route was only fixed for short sections.

Spain

Andalusia signed the E12 between Nerja and GR 92 (Costa del Sol) Manilva under the name "La Senda Litoral" in 2014. The route leads close to the coast through the towns of Manilva - Estepona - Marbella - Ojén - Mijas - Benalmádena - Málaga - Vélez Málaga - Nerja . Between Nerja and Estepona, the course also corresponds to the large Andalusian circular hiking trail GR 249 (Gran Senda de Málaga) . This section has a length of 212 km.

In Catalonia , the E12 is guided over the continuously marked and described long-distance hiking trail GR 92 (Costa Brava) . Starting at the border with the Comunidad Valencia , it goes to the Costa Daurada and in a wide arc around Tarragona and Barcelona to Blanes on the Costa Brava . Finally, after 589 km, France is reached via well-developed paths, often also small roads.

France

Larger or contiguous routes that are also marked or described as E12 are still in vain in France in 2015.

Italy

In Italy only a few short stretches have been marked in the Naples area so far.

Slovenia

The approximately 50 km long Slovenian section via Koper and Piran was completed and opened in December 2016.

Croatia

Coming from Slovenia, the route leads through Croatia from the border town of Plovanija . The route of around 1300 km is divided into dozen of sections.

E 12-a

Northwestern Istria , the first section of the trail runs for almost 60 km from Plovanije to Poreč . It was designed, mapped and marked by the working group on European hiking trails of the Croatian Mountaineering Association Hrvatski planinarski savez (HPS) in cooperation with the Istrian Mountaineering Association .

The first section E12, with a length of 59.4 km, consists of four routes:
section route length Walking time
I. Plovanija - Buje 10.6 km 2h 30min
II Buje - Brtonigla 15.6 km 4h
III Brtonigla - Kaštelir 15.8 km 4h
IV Kaštelir - Poreč 17.4 km 4h 30min

It follows the route of the former railway line to Grožnjan . From there it turns west and leads to Brtonigla on mostly unpaved roads . After the village he turns south to the river Mirna (see photo in the info box) and up to Kaštelir . In Labinci it comes back on the Parenzana route , a former narrow-gauge railway that leads to the Poreč bypass . It continues on the pavement along the beach promenade in Špadići and reaches Freedom Square ( Trg Slobode ) in Poreč. The first section ends there.

A particularly attractive part is the “island section”, which partly runs along the Mediterranean coast, but mostly on Croatian islands.

Along the west coast of Istria, past Vrsar , Rovinj , Vodnjan , Pula , Medulin and along the east coast to Labin and Opatija the route leads to the island of Cres and its extension Mali Lošinj , from Valbiska to Stara Baska on the island of Krk and to Rab . The path leads to the mainland to the Northern Velebit National Park , the island of Pag and the Paklenica National Park .

E 12-b

The second part of the route leads through the Zadar hinterland to the Kornati islands, to Dugi Otok , past Lake Vrana , to the Krka waterfalls , to Šibenik , Trogir and Split . It leads over the islands of Brač , Hvar , Vis , Lastovo and Korčula - back on the mainland - along the coast near Makarska and winds its way to the slopes of the Biokovo Mountains .

E 12-c

The third section begins in Neum in Herzegovina and loops around Hutovo Blato , Počitelj , Mostar and Medjugorje . This part of the path is designed as a separate “pilgrimage section”. In Croatia, the route leads across the Pelješac peninsula and the island of Mljet . The last part of the E12 runs from Dubrovnik to the border with Montenegro .
