Port and place Vrsar / Orsero

Vrsar ( Italian Orsera ) is a village in Istria , Croatia . It is located at the entrance of the Limfjord , between Poreč / Parenzo and Rovinj / Rovigno. In Vrsar / Orsera the character of a Mediterranean fishing settlement has been preserved. Starting from the port, the buildings rise up a slope in terraces and end in a church with a separate bell tower (campanile) at a height of 54 meters.

The place was the summer residence of the bishops of Poreč / Parenzo, and it is said that Casanova was also a guest here.

Off the coast of Vrsar / Orsera is an archipelago of 18 small, uninhabited islands that are densely overgrown with Mediterranean plants.

history

The area around today's village of Vrsar / Orsera was already settled in the Neolithic , as evidence shows. In a grotto not far from Vrsar / Orsera, traces from the Paleolithic have been discovered. The Histrians and Liburnians , the later settlers who the Romans robbed by sea piracy, were taken by them from 181 BC onwards. Fought and defeated. In the war between 178 and 177 BC The Romans conquered the settlement center of the Histrians, Nesactium (today Vizače ) near Pula / Pola. In the 1st century BC BC the Liburnians were also defeated by the Romans. During the Roman period, Vrsar / Orsera was an important trading center for agricultural products and livestock.

After the fall of the Roman Empire , Vrsar / Orsera was occupied by the Goths in 476 . These were defeated by the Byzantine emperor Justinian between 527 and 565, so that Istria fell to the Eastern Roman Empire in 538 . The Lombards ruled Istria from 751 to 774 .

In 788, Byzantine rule ended with the conquest of Charlemagne . Feudalism was introduced into Istria with the Frankish leadership . At least from 983 to 1778 Vrsar / Orsera was under the influence of the diocese of Poreč / Parenzo. With the conquest of the west coast of Istria, Poreč / Parenzo fell under the control of Venice . However, Vrsar / Orsera remained under the care of the diocese of Poreč / Parenzo. Its right of influence was however revoked in 1778 against financial compensation, so that Vrsar / Orsera fell to Venice and was thus under the direction of the community Sveti Lovreč / San Lorenzo de Pasenatico.

With Napoleon's victory over Venice in 1797, Istria fell to Austria and, with Napoleon's victory over Austria- Prussia, it fell to France . After Napoleon's defeat, Istria returned to Austria in 1813. In the 19th century, Vrsar / Orsera received its current image. The place expanded outside the city walls, the port was laid out and new houses built.

After the First World War , Istria fell to Italy . At the end of the Second World War , the region occupied by the Wehrmacht was liberated by the Allies in 1944 . In April 1944 the city was occupied by Tito's partisans and in 1947 came to the then Yugoslav republic of Croatia with the Paris Peace Treaty. The Republic of Croatia declared its independence in 1991 and was recognized under international law on January 23, 1992.

Surname

The name of the city is very old. In medieval Italian documents, among other things, the terms Ursaria, Ursarium, Vrsarium and Orsaria find. The entire stretch of coast between Funtana and Limfjord was summarized under the name Ursaria . Presumably the name Ursaria is derived from the old Mediterranean word ur ( source ). It originated when seamen were sailing along the Istrian coast and fetching drinking water from the springs in the region between Funtana and Vrsar / Orsera.

The Italian name Orsera came about because the Italian geographer Pietro Coppo believed that Orsera was derived from the name of the Roman patrician family Orsini .
