Anthony Jacklin CBE (born July 7, 1944 in Scunthorpe , England ) is a former English professional golfer . He was one of the most successful British players of his generation.

Career highlights

Jacklin won two majors . In 1969 he was the first Briton in 18 years to win the Open Championship again. The following year he won the US Open with a record advantage of seven strokes. It was the first British victory since Willie Macfarlane's triumph in 1925.

On the European Tour , Jacklin recorded eight wins between his first season in 1972 and 1982. He won many tournaments in Europe, the United States, South America, South Africa, and Australia and Asia in the pre-European Tour era.

Despite all of these successes, Jacklin will be remembered more in the golf world for his involvement in the Ryder Cup . He played in the "Great Britain & Ireland" team from 1967 to 1977 and then in the pan-European team that was first established in 1979. Apart from the draw in 1969, all of these match fights were lost, but as the non-playing captain of the Europeans, Jacklin suffered only one defeat at four consecutive Ryder Cups from 1983 to 1989. 1985 saw their first triumph after 28 years without a win, the next time they competed in 1987 the first away win since the Second World War .

In 2002 Tony Jacklin became a member of the elite World Golf Hall of Fame . At the age of 60, he retired from tournament golf after having celebrated several victories as a senior golfer.
