Paul Lawrie (born January 1, 1969 in Aberdeen ) is a Scottish professional golfer on the European Tour . He briefly achieved worldwide recognition with his major win at the 1999 Open Championship .

Career

Lawrie joined the European Tour in 1992 and played quietly for the first few years but well enough to assert himself. His first tournament victory was in Spain in 1996 and his hour struck in the 1999 season. First winning the prestigious Qatar Masters and then the absolute highlight of his career in Carnoustie in July. After a splendid final round, Lawrie was able to qualify for a necessary jump-off over 4 holes for the Open Championship and won the Claret Jug against his colleagues Jean Van de Velde ( France ) and Justin Leonard from the USA . Before the day of the final, Lawrie was 10 strokes back, the largest that a subsequent Majors winner has ever caught up. However, he also benefited from serious mistakes Van de Velde made, as the Frenchman had previously lost a lead of three strokes on the last hole and only made the play-off necessary.

After that, Lawrie's game got a boost, but not enough for the absolute world class. He tried unsuccessfully on the North American PGA Tour - which he had to leave again in 2004 - and then struggled with his form for a few years before he achieved two tournament successes again in 2011 and 2012 before disappearing again.
