Harry Vardon (born May 9, 1870 in Grouville , Jersey , Channel Islands , † March 20, 1937 in Totteridge , Hertfordshire ) was one of the most famous British professional golfers and a seven-time major winner.

As a child, growing up on the island of Jersey , he played little golf. As a teenager, he was inspired by his older brother, Tom, and by the age of 20, Vardon became a professional golfer . He was the first of his guild to play in knee breeches .

In 1896, Vardon won his first of six Open Championships, and in 1900 he became the first international golf celebrity to travel to the United States. Vardon played more than 80 matches there and won the US Open that year. Twenty years later, at the age of fifty, Vardon took second place in this major .

The show competition tours through the United States of America together with his good friend Ted Ray in 1913 and 1920 also caused a stir. In this context, there was talk of the duel "broad sword" (Ray) against "rapier" (Vardon), because Ted Ray hit the balls very dynamically, while Harry Vardon, in contrast, played particularly elegant and controlled.

He has won 62 tournaments over the course of his career. He made the handle that bears his name very popular. His number of six wins at the Open Championship has remained unmatched to this day.

In his later years as a golf course architect, Vardon designed several courses in the UK. He also worked as an instructor and author of golf books.

After his death, the PGA of America created the Vardon Trophy , which is presented annually to the PGA TOUR player with the lowest average batting average. The PGA European Tour awards the winner of the money list with the Harry Vardon Trophy at the end of the season .

In 1974 Harry Vardon was among the first golfers to be inducted into the newly created World Golf Hall of Fame .
