Orville Moody (born December 9, 1933 in Chickasha , Oklahoma , † August 8, 2008 ) was an American professional golfer who won numerous tournaments during his career.

Career

The son of a golf course marshal began his career at the Capitol Hill High School in Oklahoma City when he 1952 Gulf High School Championships of Oklahoma won. After studying for a few weeks at the University of Oklahoma , he joined the United States Army . Even in uniform he was able to continue playing golf and won the military championships and three open Korean championships. Moody spent 14 years in the Army, which he left as a sergeant. This rank later earned him the nickname Sarge .

Moody gave up his military career to try the 1967 PGA Tour . This decision turned out to be beneficial; compared to the $ 5,000 he earned annually in the military, the prize money in his first year as a professional added up to nearly $ 300,000.

In 1969 the US Open was held on the Cypress Creek Course of the Champions Golf Club in Houston . Moody won the tournament, which was played on 72 holes, with one stroke with 281 strokes in front of Deane Beman , Al Geiberger and Bob Rosburg , who each required 282 strokes.

Moody's success on the PGA Tour was limited, although in 1969 he won arguably the most prestigious men's professional golf tournament. He was also voted Player of the Year that year. The win was the only one Moody achieved in the PGA Tour. Moode was a gifted racket but had problems putting in his career.

He had far more success on the Senior Tour (now known as the Champions Tour ). As a senior he won 11 tournaments. In 1989 he won the US Senior Open , becoming the fourth man to win both the US Open and the US Senior Open.

Prior to the 1995 season, Moody had triple bypass surgery, but still played in 29 competitions that year.
