Curtis Northrup Strange (born January 30, 1955 in Norfolk , Virginia ) is an American professional golfer of the Champions Tour and two-time major winner.
Career
The son of a golf course owner, graduated from Princess Anne High School in Virginia Beach , Virginia and enjoyed a successful amateur career in 1976, he became a professional golfer . He won his first tournament on the PGA TOUR in 1979 .
In the 1980s, Strange was one of the leading golfers. During this period 16 of his 17 tournament victories fell on the PGA TOUR, he won the money list three times (1985, 1987 and 1988). He became the first golfer to surpass the magical one million dollar mark in prize money in the 1988 season. His two major victories at the US Open in 1988 and 1989 (first player since Ben Hogan in 1950 and 1951 to defend this title) were highlights of his career. After this success Strange won no more PGA Tour event.
He took part in the Ryder Cup five times as a player . In 2002 he was the captain ( non-playing captain ) of the US team.
In 1997, Strange began a full-time job as an analyst at ABC Sports . He quickly gained prestige and is now the chief golf analyst for this major media group.
Since 2005 he has been playing on the Champions Tour without a tournament win . In 2007, Strange was inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame .
Curtis Strange is married to his wife Sarah and has two grown sons. He is based in Kingsmill , Virginia .
