Bobby Jones ( Robert Tire Jones Jr. , born March 17, 1902 in Atlanta , Georgia , † December 18, 1971 ) was an American golfer . He is considered one of the greatest golfers of all time. Despite his outstanding track record, he remained an amateur throughout his life and did not switch to a professional position .

life and career

Jones' greatest victories he achieved between 1923 and 1930. During that time he won 62 percent of all national championships to which he competed. He finished first in the US Amateur Championships five times. He won the Open Championship three times, the US Open four times and the British Amateur Championship once. In 1930 Jones won all four major titles and went down in the history books of sport with this " Grand Slam ". After that, Jones retired from active competition at the age of 28.

Jones dominated the short game like no other at the time. He practiced chipping and putting in his parents' garden as a child . Throughout his career, Jones used only his Calamity Jane putter.

After his golf career, in addition to his profession as a lawyer, he also worked as an author of golf books and as a golf teacher. In 1933 Jones designed the Augusta National Course together with Alister MacKenzie and shortly afterwards launched the Masters .

In 1974 Jones was among the first golfers to be inducted into the newly created World Golf Hall of Fame .

Jones is buried in Oakland Cemetery in Atlanta, Georgia.

Jones ended his active career after winning the Grand Slam in 1930. After that, he only took part in the Masters initiated by him in 1934 . Since he remained an amateur throughout his career, he was not allowed to compete in the PGA Championship .
