Philip Alfred Mickelson (born June 16, 1970 in San Diego , California ) is a left-handed American professional golfer of the PGA TOUR .

Life / career

His best season so far was 2004, when he won his first major tournament with the US Masters and made it into the top 10 in the three other majors . With the Masters win, he was able to lose the 'title' that many had previously attributed to him, 'best golfer without a major win'. At the 2005 PGA Championship at Baltusrol Golf Club , he celebrated his second victory in a major tournament. At the US Masters 2006 Mickelson again won the coveted Green Jacket and is now one of 16 players who have won what is probably the most important major tournament in golf more than once. In addition, he managed to achieve a so-called back-to-back major victory, since the US Masters always follows the PGA Championship of the previous year. Mickelson achieved another special feature with a back-to-back victory on the PGA Tour compared to the previous week. He previously won the Bell South Classic in Duluth , Georgia by 13 strokes. With the victory in The PLAYERS Championship , which is considered the fifth major among the players , he achieved one of the greatest successes of his career in addition to his three major victories up to then. In 2010, he won The Masters for the third time. During the year, Tiger Woods' lead as No. 1 in the world rankings melted to a minimum. Mickelson had the chance to replace Woods at the top in twelve tournaments, but could not use a single one and was instead pushed to third place by Lee Westwood in October 2010 . In 2012, Phil Mickelson was inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame . As the first player ever, he managed to win the Scottish Open in 2013 and the Open Championship the following week .

Since 1994 he has played in every Presidents Cup and Ryder Cup team in the USA, up to now eleven and ten participations respectively (as of 2015). He is the only US record player in Ryder Cup history. Mickelson enjoys great popularity with the audience, which is due to his spectacular style of play, but also to his personable personality. With an income of 49.5 million euros in 2008, he was the highest-earning athlete behind Tiger Woods .

Phil Mickelson is married to Amy, nee McBride, and has three children: Amanda, Sophia and Evan.

The game

Like his professional colleague Mike Weir , he is a right-handed player who golfs left-handed. His short game is considered outstanding, which earned him the nickname "Wedge Wizard" - the newer PGA statistics do not fully reflect this characteristic. B. Scrambling (saved pars after missing greens) or sand saves (saved pars after bunker hits) are good, but not outstanding.

"Statistically verifiable", Mickelson is one of the best putters on the PGA Tour - in the 2013 season he was ranked 6th (out of 180) in the "Strokes Gained" statistics. It is noteworthy that after a rather weak year with the putter in 2011, he successfully changed the putt grip in the following season (to the "claw grip" - in his case the left hand does not enclose the grip of the putter, but the outstretched pointing and hand grip Middle fingers lie on the same). In 2013 Mickelson returned to the conventional grip with constant success, but it was observed that he returned to the claw grip within one round at The Barclay's. When putting, he shows one of the few visually striking peculiarities of his otherwise very school-like game: After addressing the ball, he "tilts" the club in the direction of stroke immediately before the back swing.

His game with the driver is more problematic: Despite a rather mediocre length of his drives (on average 292.4 yards - 70th place) he hit only 58.01% of the fairways in 2014, which is 140th place on the PGA Tour.
