Frederick Stephen Couples (born October 3, 1959 in Seattle , Washington ) is an American professional golfer of the PGA TOUR and the Champions Tour . As a young player he was nicknamed "Boom Boom Freddy" because of his long tee-offs. He is one of the few professionals who play without gloves.

Couples has been one of the select group of major winners since he won the Masters in 1992 . In the same year he was the first US-American to top the world rankings for 16 weeks .

In the course of his long career he had back problems repeatedly. Nevertheless, he is still active and successful. Couples was able to achieve third place at the Masters in April 2006 and was non-playing captain of the victorious US team in the Presidents Cup in October 2009, 2011 and 2013 .

Couples has also played on the Champions Tour since 2010 and had a very successful debut with three wins in the first two months. In August 2011 he won his first senior major , the Senior Players Championship , and another the following year, the Senior British Open Championship .
