José María Olazábal Manterola (born February 5, 1966 in Fuenterrabia , Spain ) is a Spanish professional golfer who plays on both the European Tour and the North American PGA TOUR . He is a two-time major winner.

Career

His grandfather and father were greenkeepers at the golf club; He started playing golf at the age of two. Before starting his professional career in 1985, he won several major amateur championships.

At the age of 21 he made his debut in the Ryder Cup , which was followed by another six participations (initially successfully alongside Seve Ballesteros ). Olazábal was on the Spanish team at the Dunhill Cup nine times , with the last two events in 1999 and 2000 being victorious. At the Seve Trophy he was represented four times, and in 2005 he was playing captain of the continental European selection. In 2012 he led the European team to victory as the captain of the Ryder Cup. The following year he did the same with the continental European team at the Seve Trophy and with the European team at the Royal Trophy . He achieved a historic triple in professional team golf.

Olazábal has won 26 tournaments so far in the two most important tournament series in Europe and the USA, including two Masters victories (1994 and 1999). Between 1986 and 2000 he was in the top 10 of the European money list ten times.

In 2013 he was awarded the Prince of Asturias Prize for Sports.

Personal

He became known not only for his outstanding golf game, but also for his emotions: after a bad opening round at the US Open in 1999, he broke his right hand when he hit the wall of his hotel room out of sheer pent-up anger. Even more remarkable is his fighting spirit away from the golf course; after all, he was on the verge of disability in 1995 when he was diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis in both ankles. For over 18 months, Olazábal was hardly able to run, let alone train.

After a series of unsuccessful treatments, he finally went to the Munich sports doctor Hans-Wilhelm Müller-Wohlfahrt , who was able to determine that the actual cause of Olazábal's disease was a pinched nerve in the spine.

After appropriate therapy, Olazábal fought his way back to the top of the world within a short time.
