Mark Francis O'Meara (born January 13, 1957 in Goldsboro , North Carolina ) is an American professional golfer of the PGA TOUR and two-time major winner.

Career

A graduate of California State University, Long Beach , he became a professional golfer in 1980 . He won his first event on the PGA TOUR in 1984, at the Greater Milwaukee Open , where he recorded a total of 16 tournament victories. O'Meara also had numerous successes worldwide. He achieved his two major victories at the advanced age of 41, in 1998, when, after winning the Masters at the Augusta National Golf Club, he also won the Open Championship . In the same year, O'Meara won the World Matchplay Championship , the highly paid, unofficial world championship in matchmaking . His paternal friendship with the then up-and-coming Tiger Woods has done both careers well. They won the World Cup for their home country together in 1999 .

Mark O'Meara competed for the American team five times in the Ryder Cup and twice in the Presidents Cup .

After the turn of the millennium, his form curve flattened and it was not until 2004 that O'Meara was able to make a name for itself again by winning the heavily occupied Dubai Desert Classic - an event on the European Tour . Since January 2007 he has been eligible to play for the Champions Tour .

In October 2014, his induction into the World Golf Hall of Fame for 2015 was announced.

Mark O'Meara is married to his wife Alicia. The pair have a daughter and a son and live in Windermere , Florida .
