Ian Woosnam , OBE (born March 2, 1958 in Oswestry , Shropshire , England ) is a Welsh professional golfer and former world number one. His nickname is "Woosie".

He began playing golf at the unique Llanymynech Golf Club , which is partly in England and partly in Wales . Woosnam is one of the Big Five, a group of world-class golfers who were all born within 12 months, won at least one major and made Europe competitive in the Ryder Cup . The others are Seve Ballesteros , Nick Faldo , Bernhard Langer and Sandy Lyle .

Career

Despite its small size of 1.64 m, Woosnam is a powerful golfer. As an amateur, he played with Sandy Lyle in regional competitions in Shropshire, England . In 1976 he became a professional and started the European Tour in 1979 . After three rather mixed years, the breakthrough came in 1982 with the victory at the Swiss Open . In the following years Woosnam was classified a total of 13 times in the top 10 of the money list , which he won in 1987 and 1990. In 1990 he became the first golfer to break the magical £ 1 million mark in one season worldwide.

After a third place in the 1986 Open Championship , Woosnam achieved his greatest successes in 1991, first place in the world rankings for a total of 50 weeks and his first (and only) major win, at the Masters Tournament in Augusta , Georgia .

His form waned in the late 1990s , but Woosnam almost made a spectacular comeback at the 2001 Open Championship . A mistake by his caddy (one club too many in the golf bag) earned him two penalty strokes in the final round, and in the end he “only” came third and fired the offender. In the same year Woosie won the Wentworth World Match Play Championship and became the first player to win this prestigious trophy in 3 decades.

Woosnam has been a member of the European Ryder Cup team eight times in a row (1983 to 1997), and although he has not won a single match, his record is more than respectable with 14 wins, 12 losses and 5 draws. In 2002 he was vice-captain and in 2006 he led the team as captain of the Ryder Cup to the highest victory on European soil.

In total, Woosnam has won 28 tournaments on the PGA European Tour and many more worldwide. He lives in Jersey today .
