Golf world ranking

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The World Golf Rankings is the world ranking in golf . First Leaders of 1986 introduced Mr. World Ranking ( English Official World Golf Rankings - OWGR ) was Bernhard Langer from Anhausen . The current front runner is the American Dustin Johnson . The forerunner of the world golf rankings was Mark McCormack's world golf rankings, introduced in 1968 .

In 2006, the Women's World Golf Rankings (officially Rolex Rankings ) also introduced a world ranking list for women, which is currently topped by Ko Jin-young from South Korea .

calculation

The basis for the calculation of the points are the results of the events of the six leading professional tournament series ( International Federation of PGA Tours ). These are the PGA TOUR , the PGA European Tour , the Asian Tour , the PGA Tour of Australasia , the Japan Golf Tour and the South African Sunshine Tour . Top placements that are achieved in the European Challenge Tour and in the North American Nationwide Tour - both second-tier tournament series - are also counted. The same goes for the regional Canadian tour .

The world ranking is determined every Monday taking into account the tournaments played in the previous week.

The results of the tours mentioned above are included in the evaluation. The points earned by a player in the previous week result from the value of the tournament played as well as its game result and are read in the OWGR Points Distribution Chart .

The value of a tournament depends on which players from the top 200 of the world rankings and which top 30 of the ranking list of the corresponding home tour took part in the tournament. The corresponding rating values are listed in the two tables World Event Rating Values and Home Tour Event Rating Values in the OWGR Points Distribution Chart . The total of the Home Tour Event Rating Values is limited to a maximum of 75% of the total of the World Event Rating Values .

Both together determine the total rating values of the tournament. In the OWGR Points Distribution Chart you can see in the corresponding column how many world ranking points a player has earned in the previous week through his tournament result.

The MAJOR CHAMPIONSHIPS and the PLAYERS Championship are excluded from this calculation. The values are set for them. Minimum values are also specified for various tournaments and tournament series and listed in the OWGR Points Distribution Chart .

To calculate the world ranking, the world ranking points earned by a player in the past 104 weeks (2 years) are weighted and added up. The weighting takes place in two periods. The first period lasts 13 weeks. For this most recent period the points are simply weighted. The points from the tournaments that were earlier are reduced by 1/92 from week to week. Thus, a tournament that was 14 weeks ago receives a weighting of 91/92 (0.9891) and a tournament that was played 104 weeks ago only receives 1/92 (0.0109).

The sum of the points calculated in this way is now divided by the number of tournaments played in the past two years - at least by 40 and at most by 52, if more tournaments have been played in this period, only the current 52 tournaments are taken into account. The result is the average points of a player and determines his world ranking.

meaning

The first 50 in the world rankings are automatically eligible for the US Masters , US Open , Open Championship and World Golf Championships tournaments ( the first 64 qualify for the WGC Accenture Match Play Championship ). The first 100 in the world rankings are invited to the PGA Championship .

precursor

The first ranking that summarized the results of male professional golfers was Mark McCormack's world golf rankings . Published at the end of 1968, it took into account the results from January 1966 to December 1968. This ranking thus covered a period of three years instead of two years later. Another difference was the higher weighting of tournament wins and the exclusive consideration of top ten results, even in the majors. The first leader was McCormack's client Jack Nicklaus . Unlike today's ranking, McCormack's list did not have a direct purpose such as the right to start certain tournaments such as the majors, World Matchplay Championships or the World Golf Championships . Mark McCormack's world golf rankings should stimulate competition among the top golfers and at the same time reflect the performance of the stars. It was part of McCormack's marketing strategy and increased public awareness of the sport of golf.

Records

Tiger Woods spent most of the consecutive weeks (June 2005 to November 2010) in first place with 281 weeks. In addition, he led the ranking list for 683 weeks, which is also a record. Three golfers have topped the world rankings for one or more full calendar years: Nick Faldo (1993), Greg Norman (1996), and Tiger Woods (2000-2003, 2006-2009).
