World Golf Championships
The World Golf Championships ( WGC for short ) is an annual series of four tournaments for male professional golfers. It was started by the International Federation of PGA Tours in 1999.
These tournaments count towards the ratings of the two largest series, the US PGA TOUR and the PGA European Tour :
- WGC-Match Play Championship Dell (until 2014: WGC-Accenture Match Play Championship )
- WGC-Mexico Championship (until 2006: WGC-American Express Championship; 2007 to 2010: WGC-CA Championship; 2011 to 2016: WGC-Cadillac Championship)
- WGC-Bridgestone Invitational (before 2006: NEC Invitational)
- WGC-HSBC Champions (before 2009: HSBC Champions)
From 2000 to 2006 the World Cup (nations competition for two-man teams) was also a WGC event under the name WGC World Cup .
Venues
By 2006, two to three of the events were in the US and one or two in other countries. In 2007 and 2008 the series was only held in the USA, since 2009 there has been an event in China with the WGC-HSBC Champions and from 2017 there has also been one in Mexico with the WGC-Mexico Championship .
meaning
Due to its very high endowment (US $ 9.75 million each) and its great value for the golf world rankings, this tournament series is to be placed immediately after the four major championships and the Players Championship .
