The WGC-Dell Match Play Championship is a golf tournament of the World Golf Championships tournament series that is played in match play format. Founded in 1999, it takes place annually in January or February and is considered an official event by the US PGA TOUR , the European Tour and the Japan Golf Tour .

The predecessor was the Andersen Consulting World Championship of Golf , a 32-man match game tournament that was not part of any official money list and was played from 1995 to 1998.

mode

The field of participants consists of the best 64 available players in the golf world rankings . The individual matches are played in match play mode over 18 holes and, in the event of a tie, continued over additional holes until a winner has been determined. In the first round, the matches are set according to the world ranking, that is, the 1st plays against the 64th, the 2nd against the 63rd, and so on. The final was over 36 holes from 1999 to 2010 and will be decided over 18 holes from 2011. In addition, the losers of the semi-finals play 3rd place over 18 holes. The six rounds of the tournament will be played on five consecutive days beginning on Wednesday, with one round taking place every day through Friday. The quarter and semi-finals will be played on Saturday, the final and the game for third place on Sunday.

Since 2015 the field of participants has been divided into 16 groups of four players, in which everyone plays against each other over a maximum of 18 holes. The group winners play the round of 16 on Saturday morning, followed by the quarter-finals in the afternoon. The semi-finals will take place on Sunday morning and the final and the game for third place in the afternoon. From the round of 16, the matches will be played until the decision has been made, i.e. beyond the 18th hole if necessary.

Venues

The competition was held at La Costa Resort and Spa in California from 1999 to 2006 , with the exception of 2001 when the tournament was held at the Metropolitan Golf Club in Victoria , Australia .

In 2007 the event moved to The Gallery Golf Club in Marana , Arizona , a suburb northwest of Tucson, for two years . Since all three World Golf Championships were only played in the United States from 2007 onwards, several golfers, including Tiger Woods and Ernie Els , as well as in the media outside of the United States, received multiple criticism. The PGA Tour Envoy Tim Finchem defended the host, as in the US, more money can be earned than elsewhere.

In 2009 the Ritz-Carlton Golf Club , designed by Jack Nicklaus and located in Dove Mountain in Marana , was chosen as the venue .
